Drew McIntyre has opened up about his previous mental health struggles, discussing how difficult it can be talk openly and seek help.

Despite being a two-time WWE Champion and one of the top stars in modern day WWE, things haven’t always been easy for Drew McIntyre.

After initially signing with WWE in 2007, and being dubbed ‘the chosen one’ by WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, McIntyre’s first run with the company fizzled out and he was released in 2014.

Away from the bright lights of WWE, the Scottish star set about rebuilding his career, and eventually returned to the company in April 2017 a completely different performer. From here, McIntyre captured the NXT Championship before going on to greater success on the main roster.

As part of a joint venture between WWE and Ad Council’s Seize the Awkward campaign, McIntyre reflected on the more difficult moments in his life to date and his struggles with his mental health. The former World Champion explained how bottling up problems only led to bigger problems in his life, before encouraging others to speak openly.

“When I was younger, I kept everything inside, it wasn’t healthy. It bubbled over, and affected my life. As soon as I was open and honest I was able to let everybody within my support group know how I was feeling, that built my mind back to where it needed to be. And I’ve had a few friends reach out and tell me they’re not in a good place, it’s not easy as a guy, especially, being open – and that’s true strength”
