Drew McIntyre has thrown his hat into the ring to face 16-time world champion John Cena.
While John Cena is reportedly heading back to WWE to face Roman Reigns at SummerSlam, Drew McIntyre is jockeying for position behind the Universal Champion.
Speaking to On Demand Entertainment, McIntyre said that he hopes a match up between the pair will happen in the future. Before going on to add that there’s no bigger match than Drew McIntyre vs. John Cena.
“I hope it does happen. I’ve been around John since I was 22 years old. I just turned 36 and we’ve never had any singles match, which blows my mind. We’ve been in tag matches and multi-man matches, but never a singles match. Where I’m at today in my career and managing to reach the top of the industry after so many ups and downs, and where John is at, he’s just on another level. He’s conquered WWE, conquering Hollywood, but he still loves WWE more than anything and wants to come back and help and have those big matches. There’s no bigger match, as far as I’m concerned than John Cena vs. McIntyre,”
For his part, Cena said in a recent interview that it’s a matter of when and not if he returns to the company that helped make him a global superstar.
Meanwhile, Stephanie McMahon has told fans to expect a “lot of surprises” at the upcoming summer spectacular.
Cena has been absent from WWE since WrestleMania 36 where he met ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt in a ‘Firefly Funhouse Match.’ Another star who also departed WWE after the same event was Brock Lesnar, in his case following defeat to Drew McIntyre.
While there has been no confirmation of an opponent, the latest reports suggest that Lesnar remains in talks with WWE.
