Drew McIntyre Contract Negotiations: How WWE Character Change Factored Into Plans

There has been further insight into what the future could hold for Drew McIntyre.

Multiple reports have stated that McIntyre’s current deal expires shortly after WrestleMania, where the former World Champion will look to become the top star on Raw once again as he challenges Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Like many top stars on the red brand including Rollins and Becky Lynch, McIntyre has still not signed a new deal with the company despite the fact that his contract is nearing its end. Although at one point it seemed to be a guarantee that all of the top stars in WWE would re-sign with the company, negotiations with top stars in multiple promotions have been more unpredictable than ever before.

Discussing the top stars of WWE who are yet to sign new deals on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer stated that it is highly unlikely that Lynch, Rollins or McIntyre would not remain with the company:

“She’s [Becky Lynch] not going anywhere, though, or very likely. I mean, you never say 100%. But she’s gonna get a big, big number. I mean, the last contract she had a big number, she’ll probably get a bigger one this time. But yeah, her deal is not up, her deal is coming up wrong. I think Rollins’ deal is coming up. McIntyre’s deal is essentially going to be up at WrestleMania. But I don’t expect any of them to leave.”

Discussing McIntyre, Meltzer added that the fact that he is promoting future feuds with the likes of CM Punk is a strong indication that the former World Champion will re-sign. Also, it was stated that McIntyre wanted to gauge the fan reaction to his new persona and would have reacted accordingly depending on the reaction:

“The fact McIntyre hasn’t signed. I mean, I was checking with people and it’s like, look, the belief is that he knows what the situation is and he’s already promoting feuds for the summer and the fall, so I don’t think he’s planning on going anywhere. And the thing with him with the contract, the thing that he was looking for months ago was the contract was running out, and he wasn’t in a rush to sign.

Number one, he thought that he wanted to do this new character. And if the new character didn’t work out and the booking wasn’t strong and everything like that, the idea was maybe go back and spend time with the family and take time off. And that was among the thoughts. Obviously, the character got over great.

And the other aspect of the character getting over great is that by doing so and not signing the feeling is that his price should be higher, because he’s a much bigger star, and he’s got big programmes to come back to then was the situation six months ago. So we’ll see how that all works out. But I would feel that his not signing and gambling, I would kind of say couldn’t it have turned out better, but certainly turned out good.”

In a recent interview, Drew McIntyre gave his thoughts on that WWE Raw segment.
