Drew McIntyre Reacts To Cesaro’s WWE Departure

Former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre has reacted to the surprising news that Cesaro has left WWE after his contract with the company expired.

News broke on February 24th that Cesaro, real name Claudio Castagnoli, had departed the WWE after his contract expired. The initial report from PWInsider noted that WWE had offered another contract extension, but that Castagnoli turned down the offer when the two sides could not come to terms, and also that the expiration of his contract meant that there would be no non-compete clause in effect, meaning that he is free to work wherever he chooses.

An update from Fightful Select provided more information, confirming that Cesaro had been working on a one-year contract extension and that WWE had attempted to get him to sign a new deal. While there had been plans to feature the performer on upcoming shows, the plans were scrapped when he didn’t re-sign with the company, and there were no long terms plans in place creatively for him unless he were to agree to a new deal.

Speaking on the In The Kliq podcast, McIntyre explained that it’s always sad to see a friend leave the company, and especially one that he never got to wrestle one-on-one:

“That’s a shame. So many people come and go from the company, I’m one of them, and we always see each other down the line, but it sucks more when it’s a friend and somebody that you really want to wrestle. That was my number one match, I think it was his number one match. We’ve both been wrestling for 20 years, but never had a singles match. So we’re gonna be a bit longer, it’ll happen eventually.”

“But, you know, he’s got his family, he’s got his new kid, and he’s going to be just fine. He is far too talented not to be.”

Drew McIntyre has had his hands full in recent months with Madcap Moss and Happy Corbin. The Scotsman has defeated Moss at Day 1, the Elimination Chamber, and most recently on the 25th of February edition of SmackDown.
