Dominik Mysterio Explains Why He Turned On Edge & Rey Mysterio

By Sondra Ruth. Published 13th September 2022.

Dominik Mysterio explained his rationale for turning on his father and joining The Judgment Day.

At Clash at the Castle on September 3rd, Dominik Mysterio helped his father and the Rated R Superstar secure a victory over The Judgment Day – only to snap after the match and deliver a low blow to Edge before clotheslining his father, seemingly because he was angry that Rey overlooked him as his tag team partner.

Last week, Rhea Ripley declared that she’d made Dominik into a man before revealing that he’d officially joined The Judgment Day. While Dominik appeared sporting a new look as he was dressed in black with slicked back hair, he waited until September 12th to speak about his motivations.

In a backstage interview set against a dark background, Dominik said that he’s always been known as just the son of Rey Mysterio, but that all changed at Clash at the Castle. He said that for the first time in his life, he felt alive and he became his own person, done taking the disrespect and bottling it up inside. He also made it clear that Edge got exactly what he deserved when Dominik hit him with a low blow.

Continuing, the younger Mysterio said that when he faces Edge later in the night, he’ll finish what he started. He then addressed his father, saying that he knows Rey is disappointed in him, but that’s too bad because it’s his life, not his father’s Dominik Mysterio said that Rey should look in the mirror and ask himself why he didn’t get to know his son, and consider why he never asked what Dominik wanted for his own career. He then said:

“For such a tiny, tiny man, you cast a large shadow – and I’m done living under it.”

Rhea Ripley was then shown whispering in Dominik Mysterio’s ear, and after that, Dominik said:

“I’m not your baby boy anymore. Soy un hombre; I’m a man.”

Later on, as Dominik was shown preparing for his match with Edge, he was approached by his father who attempted to talk sense into his son once again. He said that Dominik didn’t need to face Edge tonight, and that if he went through with the match, things would never be the same.

Edge and Dominik Mysterio did indeed face off in the main event of Raw, but even though it looked like the Rated R Superstar would emerge victorious, Rey Mysterio tried to intervene on behalf of his son and then the match ended in disqualification when The Judgment Day attacked. They once again targeted Edge’s leg, with Balor stomping on it with a Coup de Grace.

Elsewhere on Raw, Dakota Kai and IYO SKY defeated Aliyah and Raquel Rodriguez to become the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. Full results from the September 12th episode can be found here.
