Dominik Mysterio has looked back on how the 2005 storyline which saw Rey Mysterio battling Eddie Guerrero over his custody affected him in real life.
When Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero entered into an increasingly bitter feud that year, Guerrero threatened to reveal a terrible secret about the Mysterio family. ‘Latino Heat’ divulged that he had a child out of wedlock, and it was none other than Dominik Mysterio, who he had given to Rey and his wife when they were struggling to have a child of their own. As this was professional wrestling, the feud eventually led to a match for custody of the boy at that year’s SummerSlam. The bout was a violent affair and featured Dominick Mysterio trying to come to Rey’s aid and barely escaping an attack from Guerrero. In the end, Vickie Guerrero held onto her husband to allow Rey Mysterio to climb the ladder and get the briefcase containing the custody documents.
In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Dominik Mysterio recalled his school friends constantly asking him who his real dad was, with it getting to the point that his teachers even became worried about his home life.
“[Classmates] were always asking who my dad was. Teachers were freaking out because they didn’t really know what was going on, they didn’t know it was a storyline so they were concerned about my life at home.
However, the younger Mysterio also saw a silver lining in the situation as his involvement in the shows meant he got to travel and not go to school.
“But it was pretty great. I was traveling, missing school.”
The feud was the first time the WWE Universe saw Dominik Mysterio in a wrestling ring, but it wouldn’t be the last as he made his official in-ring debut with the company at SummerSlam 2020 where he lost a Street Fight to Seth Rollins, who was embroiled in a feud with the Mysterio family for several months.
