Dominik Mysterio Believed He Would Go Home With Eddie Guerrero If He Won Custody Feud

Dominik Mysterio has recalled that during the 2005 rivalry between Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio where the two fought over his custody, he believed that he would have to go home with Guerrero if his father was defeated.

When Mysterio and Guerrero entered into an increasingly bitter feud that year, Guerrero threatened to reveal a terrible secret about the Mysterio family. ‘Latino Heat’ divulged that he had a child out of wedlock, and it was none other than Dominik Mysterio, who he had given to Rey and his wife when they were struggling to have a child of their own. As this was professional wrestling, the feud eventually led to a match for custody of the boy at that year’s SummerSlam. The bout was a violent affair and featured Dominick Mysterio trying to come to Rey’s aid and barely escaping an attack from Guerrero. In the end, Vickie Guerrero held onto her husband to allow Rey Mysterio to climb the ladder and get the briefcase containing the custody documents.

Dominik gave his perspective of the feud in a recent interview on ‘Out of Character with Ryan Satin’, saying that it was exciting to be away from school but the on-screen storyline did lead to some confusion.

“It was crazy being a kid and being on TV. I think the most exciting part about all of that was being away from school. I was in the third grade and the last thing I wanted to do was be in school. I was getting to travel with dad and ride tricycles all around the arena so why would I want to be in school? I would come back to school and all the teachers would be curious on what my home life was like because they didn’t know if my dad was my dad or Eddie was my dad or if there was this actual custody battle for me.”

He went on to say that his teachers didn’t think the situation was healthy.

“Some of the teachers had to pull my mom aside or my dad aside when they’d come pick me up and ask them what’s the deal because they didn’t think it was healthy. Overall I think the kids were curious too like who my dad was but I had to tell them I’m pretty sure my dad is Rey Mysterio. They even had me hooked at one point like what’s going on here.”

Speaking about the lead up to the Ladder Match, the younger Mysterio explained that he genuinely thought he would be going home with the WWE Hall of Famer if Rey Mysterio didn’t get the victory.

“I don’t think I thought about it but I thought I would eventually go home with Eddie if he won. I genuinely thought I’d probably end up going home with him because I remember them telling me they wanted to do this storyline and my dad pitched it to me and I was all on board with it but I remember asking after like what’s going to happen afterwards. I remember thinking as a kid like what if my dad doesn’t win and I have to go home with Eddie? I never actually asked that but I thought about it. Personally, I would sit there and think about it.”

The feud was the first time the WWE Universe saw Dominik Mysterio in a wrestling ring, but it wouldn’t be the last as he made his official in-ring debut with the company at SummerSlam 2020 where he lost a Street Fight to Seth Rollins, who was embroiled in a feud with the Mysterio family for several months. In the recent WWE Draft, both Dominik and Rey Mysterio moved from SmackDown to Raw.
