The pairing of Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode have defeated The Street Profits to capture the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships.
After weeks of hype and foul play by the duo of Ziggler and Roode, which included attacking Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins on the January 1 edition of the blue brand, the two teams finally met on January 8 with an outcome few saw coming.
Though The Street Profits put up a valiant effort, the former NXT Tag Team Champions were fighting an uphill battle thanks to the injured leg of Ford – a consequence of the previous week’s attack – which the challengers took full advantage of, nailing a beautiful spinebuster into a Zig Zag for the victory.
Following the bout, Roode and Dolph Ziggler again attacked the former champions and kicked their fallen bodies from the ring.
The result ends a quite impressive near year long reign which began on Monday Night Raw on March 2, 2020, when the duo defeated Murphy and Seth Rollins to capture the gold. Since then, they have taken on all-comers including The Viking Raiders, Andrade and Angel Garza as well as Angel Garza and Austin Theory.
On October 12, 2020, The Street Profits were drafted to Friday Night SmackDown, with their counterparts The New Day heading in the opposite direction. In order to solve the title complication, the two teams simply swapped gold and carried over their reign on different brands.
