On January 17th the wrestling world was rocked by the news that Jay Briscoe had sadly passed away.
The 38-year-old died as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident which also claimed the life of one other person. Briscoe’s daughters were in the vehicle with him at the time and sustained serious injuries in the crash.
On January 18th AEW broadcast their weekly episode of Dynamite and paid tribute to the star who had been signed to Ring of Honor. A graphic was shown for the ROH legend at the start of the show and numerous wrestlers on the show wore black armbands as a sign of respect. However it has been reported that AEW were blocked from hosting a full tribute show by Warner Bros. Discovery. The Briscoes had also been prevented from appearing on AEW television previously.
The issue goes back to homophobic remarks made by Jay back in the early 2010s. It is important to state that Jay apologised for these remarks on numerous occasions and has been publicly praised by several members of the LGBTQ+ since his passing.
More Jay Briscoe Tribute Shows To Come
This led to a tribute show being filmed at the same taping that will be available on Honor Club and YouTube. It has now been confirmed by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that there will be more tribute shows to come.
“Khan is also planning a tribute episode of the first ROH television show on Honor Club for Briscoe, with both the show taped in Fresno and the first ROH show to air numerous clips of Briscoe matches. A third tribute for Briscoe will air on the Supercard of Honor PPV show on 3/31 from the Galen Center in Los Angeles.”
Nick Jackson also recently revealed the efforts he and brother Matt went to in order to try and get their friends and in-ring rivals signed to AEW.
