A new report has offered more details on the injury that caused Gigi Dolin and her tag team partner Jacy Jayne to be pulled from the Women’s Tag Team Championship Tournament.
On August 5th it was announced that WWE would be holding a tournament to crown new Women’s Tag Team Champions. The belts have been vacant since mid-May when the most recent title holders, Sasha Banks and Naomi walked out of a Monday Night Raw taping following what was reported as a row over creative.
While the tournament was welcomed by fans, it ran into problems pretty quickly. Just hours before NXT 2.0 duo Nikkita Lyons and Zoey Stark were due to compete in the first round on the August 19th edition of SmackDown, they were pulled from the tournament.
It was noted at the time that Lyons was “medically unavailable.” Subsequent reports claimed that this was due to her vaccination status, and the show being held in Canada. Nikkita Lyons has subsequently denied this.
On the show, the duo were replaced by former NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions, Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne of Toxic Attraction. Making their main roster debut, the pair upset the team of Natalya and Sonya Deville to advance to the next round.
However, ahead of the August 22nd episode of Raw, it was announced that they had now been removed from the tournament due to an injury suffered by Dolin.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that Dolin suffered a concussion during the match on SmackDown. The injury has also left main roster plans for Toxic Attraction up in the air, at least for the time being.
With Toxic Attraction out of action, a “Second Chance Fatal-Four-Way” is now scheduled to take place on the upcoming episode of SmackDown. The winners will then face Raquel Rodriguez and Aliyah.
On August 22nd, IYO Sky and Dakota Kai became the first team to book themselves a spot in the final with victory over Asuka and Alexa Bliss.
