Diamond Dallas Page has recalled his heartwarming encounter backstage in WCW with fellow WWE Hall of Famer The Ultimate Warrior.
In an exclusive interview, WWE Hall of Famer DDP told Inside The Ropes‘ Lead Writer Gary Cassidy how he went from being a chauffeur on the same card as Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VI, to Ultimate Warrior hugging DDP and telling Page he’s the reason he fell in love with wrestling again.
“The first part of the memories, you have to understand that I was at WrestleMania 6 and I was Diamond Dallas Chauffeur. I literally drove the ’62 pink Cadillac with Peggy Sue, who was Sherri Martel, with Honky Tonk Man, Jimmy Hart and Greg Valentine. The main event was Warrior vs Hogan.
“Eight years later, Warrior comes into the company and he asks to speak to me and Goldberg. We hopped in one of those golf carts – because it’s an arena, so it was huge – we drove over to where his locker room was and, when we walked through the door, he gave us both a big hug and he said, ‘You guys are the reason I’m back because you’re having so much fun out there that it made me remember why I used to love the business.’ That was pretty cool.
DDP went on to reveal why he believes he and Goldberg would main event a card with Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior and Bret Hart vs Sting on it at Halloween Havoc.
“I don’t think anybody could follow us that night. So, for me to go from driving the pink Cadillac to the ring, eight years later, to be sharing a main event spot that nobody wanted to follow, you know? That match with Goldberg, Goldie’s had some good matches since then but he ain’t ever had one that good. That’s one of my top four matches.”
WWE Hall of Famer Diamond Dallas Page would go on to reveal how Dusty Rhodes had actually pitched a different ending to his match that evening with Goldberg – which would have saw the undefeated streak come to an end and Page become the new WCW World Heavyweight Champion!
