DDP Originally Said No To Shark Tank Appearance

In 2014 DDP appeared on American business reality show ‘Shark Tank’ with his brand ‘DDP Yoga’. But, has revealed he actually declined their offer to appear.

DDP Yoga is over 10 years strong, in that time becoming one of the most recognised Yoga practices in the game. Diamond Dallas Page has created an empire of Yoga programmes to suit all needs – driven by self will, confidence and desire to push yourself.

Chris Jericho recently welcomed back DDP to his ‘Talk Is Jericho’ podcast where the two sit down and talk about everything from the American Wrestling Association, his AEW debut, ‘beef’ with Ric Flair and of course the DDP Yoga programme.

When asked about Page’s ‘big break’ with DDPY, Chris focussed on the pitch DDP gave to the ‘sharks’ on ‘Shark Tank’, a US version of what we in the UK know as ‘Dragon’s Den’. In it, entrepreneurs present their business ideas to a panel of five investors or ‘sharks’, who decide whether to invest in their company.

DDP Yoga was pitched to the sharks in 2014, here’s what Diamond had to say about it:

It took five interviews to get there! And on the last one they made you literally hand write, contracts to them that basically, they had total control over you for the next 18 months.

I was like wait a minute, we can’t put tweets out? I did local TV everywhere I went!…I had to ask them permission.

Steve [DDP’s business partner] said “we’re going to sign this thing from Shark Tank, what shall we do?” I said, you know Steve, I let one person control my destiny one time and it didn’t work out well for me. We’re gonna make it or fail, but we’re going to do it on our decisions – Tell Shark Tank…Love the show, appreciate the opportunity, we’re gonna pass!

So we did!

This decision to decline the appearance by Page turned out to be the best decision he’d make – the show quick to call him back. DDP negotiated out all of the control they wanted on him and his brand.

Interestingly, should DDP have received an offer from shark Mark Cuban, he already knew that he could help one of Cuban’s players from the Dallas Mavericks – Dirk Nowitzki who he recalls was having back trouble.

90 minutes later I got a call, an executive producer on the line, “we gotta fix this”. And I got total control of what I wanted to do, I signed it, it was the best thing that’s ever happened to our company. We never went there to get a deal. I’d have like to have gone with Mark Cuban to get a deal, because I wanted to work with Nowitzki, I wanted to help his back.

The sharks did not invest in DDP. But DDP was incredibly thankful for the opportunity, proclaiming to Jericho that “Bottom line, it was amazing, Chris we did $1 million in 5 days!”. Clearly the exposure worked.

Since, it’s been onwards and upwards for the DDP Yoga brand. The fitness system having had some key influential transformation stories from DDP’s wrestling family including Chris Jericho himself, Rob Van Dam, Marc Mero, Perry Saturn and Jake ‘The Snake ‘Roberts.
