Diamond Dallas Page has unfavourably compared Karrion Kross’ first main roster run to an infamous storyline from wrestling past.
After signing with WWE in early 2020 Karrion Kross arrived in NXT flanked by his real-life partner Scarlett. The star proceeded to dominate all before him and won the NXT Championship on two occasions. This naturally meant that when Kross arrived on the main roster, fans were expecting big things.
However, the star’s main roster run never got going. Kross arrived without Scarlett and was defeated on debut in less than two minutes. Despite being given a new look complete with gladiator helmet, Kross’ fortunes failed to improve and he was released by the company alongside Scarlett on November 4th 2021.
However, with Triple H now installed as Head of Creative, the pair have since returned and now feature together on SmackDown.
Speaking on his DDP Snake Pit podcast, Diamond Dallas Page commented on the turnaround in fortunes for the star. Page said that Kross had been set up to fail during his first main roster run, comparing his struggles to his own failed stint as a stalker in 2001. Upon signing with WWE, DDP debuted as an unhinged stalker who set his sights on The Undertaker’s then-wife. This was despite being one of the most popular babyface’s in WCW in the late 1990’s.
“Well, let’s look. I have to go back because at you know, the show you put on, you know, the Flair’s last big deal weekend, and you put me next to Karrion Kross. And I’m looking at that handsome, six foot four, 265 pound, I watched him as a fan. Watched his girl. I mean, this cat has everything.
Now, I remember him from NXT saw what they did with them in WWE, which that’s called setting you up to fail. Okay, if the booker’s set you up to fail, and you got to do what they tell you to do, and then you fail, it’s not your fault. But that’s what they wanted you to do, and, and the example would be, for me, would have been the stalker.
You know, I want to play that to its extreme, but, you know, it wasn’t going to help me. You know, it wasn’t [helping], it was setting me up to fail. But that was the way it went out. And that’s when I see someone like a Karrion, that guy and everything.
And I literally said to him, after we got done with the second, the second day of signing, we took a picture together and I said, Dude, I know it seems crazy that you are not in one of these two top companies, because you belong there and a hell of a spot. I said, But don’t lose faith, bro. Don’t lose faith, it’s going to happen. Two weeks later I get called and he’s doing a run on Drew McIntyre.
You can’t start a guy in a better position than that, I had nothing to do with that. But there’s certain guys no matter what. It’s almost impossible for them not to get another opportunity and that’s one of the cats and he has the potential to be a humongous star in WWE.”
Since arriving back in WWE Karrion Kross has been on a mission to get under the skin of Drew McIntyre, even attacking the Scot on debut.
