David Crockett has recalled a time Abdullah The Butcher nearly got his father, Jim Crockett’s promotion thrown off TBS.
In the 1980s, Jim Crockett Promotions rivalled even the World Wrestling Federation in terms of size and scale. The company even had a weekly national TV show on TBS.
However, David Crockett has recalled a moment involving Abdullah The Butcher that put that slot in jeopardy.
Speaking on the Under The Ring podcast, Crockett was asked what the craziest thing he had seen on a show was. The first thing that sprang to mind was the time The Wild Man From Sudan decided to eat raw liver live on air, something he says nearly got them kicked off TBS.
“The craziest thing I’ve ever seen on a show? Okay. Yep. I’ve seen some others that weren’t on the show, but wrestling on a show? They’re all crazy.
“But I know that we almost got kicked off TBS because of Abdullah the Butcher bringing out this piece of raw liver and started to eat it, and the blood, and of course, he’s bleeding too, you know. Ted [Turner]’s secretary called and said, ‘Never again.’ So, yeah.”
While Jim Crockett Promotions was sold to Ted Turner in 1988 and became the foundation of WCW, it has recently been resurrected to serve as the promotion for Ric Flair’s final match on July 31st.
