Dave Meltzer has awarded Will Ospreay vs Shingo Takagi from the September 27 G1 Climax show five stars. Writing in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer described the match as ‘Among the top five matches of this year.’
The match was only the second-ever singles match between the two competitors. Their Best of the Super Juniors bout last year earned a five and three-quarter star rating from Meltzer. It was also voted the best match of 2019 by WON readers.
The series has now reached the rare milestone of never dropping below a five-star rating in singles competition. It joins the quadrilogy between Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada as one of the few to earn the accolade.
The famous 1989 trilogy between Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat also managed to earn five stars from Meltzer for each bout in the series, although subsequent matches between the two failed to earn the rare five-star rating.
Okada and Omega’s feud retains its position as the best series of all time – according to Meltzer – going by average star rating, with the lowest star rating awarded an eye-watering six stars.
Both Takagi and Ospreay followed up the match with four and a half star bouts on the September 30th G1 show. The fourth night of the A block saw Ospreay defeat Jay White whilst Takagi lost to Tomohiro Ishii.
