Aspects of this week’s special Brodie Lee tribute episode of AEW Dynamite were partly inspired by a telephone conversation Dave Meltzer had with AEW owner Tony Khan.
It was revealed yesterday that the planned New Year’s Smash episode of AEW Dynamite that was supposed to take place tomorrow has been pushed back a week in favour of a special tribute show to the late Brodie Lee (Jon Huber), which will be dedicated to his wife and children.
All of the scheduled matches and segments on the show have been put on hold in favour of a card that will feature members of The Dark Order in every match, with the bouts held specifically for the benefit of Huber’s family.
One of the matches will feature the three favourite wrestlers of Huber’s son Brodie teaming up for one night only, as Cody Rhodes, Orange Cassidy and 10 (Preston Vance) take on Team Taz (Brian Cage, Ricky Starks and Powerhouse Hobbs).
Other matches confirmed for the special card are:
- The Young Bucks & Colt Cabana vs. Matt Hardy & Private Party
- Hangman Page, Jon Silver & Alex Reynolds vs. MJF, Santana & Ortiz
- Anna Jay & Tay Conti vs. Dr. Britt Baker & Penelope Ford
- Lance Archer, Evil Uno & Stu Grayson vs. Eddie Kingston, Butcher & Blade
I haven’t slept much recently, I have a lot of responsibilities across my different roles, but this was the hardest week I’ve ever experienced. I’ll miss Jon very much. I worked all night on a tribute card to honor him, the response from Amanda & from fans made me cry. Thank you.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Tony Khan rewrote several aspects of the show following a telephone conversation Meltzer had with the AEW promoter.
Dave Meltzer says that until late on he and Tony Khan were talking about Kenny Omega’s match against Fenix on New Year’s Smash, but that after their conversation and following some suggestions he had made, Khan called him back the next morning and told him he had stayed up all night rewriting the show.
“Last night I was actually talking to Tony Khan – and you know it’s a real bad situation – and he felt very pressured to put on this unbelievable show for Wednesday. He really felt it. He said he had some ideas and I mentioned some things that I am sure he had already thought about anyway. It wasn’t like I was giving him any ideas, although I did suggest a few things, and I don’t know if they are gonna do them or not. Then this morning I hear from him and he said , ‘After our conversation I stayed up all night and rewrote the entire show.’ So that was a decision from late, last night because we were still talking about Kenny Omega and Fenix late last night. So that’s like midnight our time, roughly. He’s in Jacksonville, so it was like 3am maybe, then he stayed up all night to rewrite the show.”
