Darby Allin opened up about Sting‘s retirement match at AEW Revolution.
Back in October of 2023, Sting announced that his final match would take place at the 2024 edition of AEW Revolution. Fast forward to the February 7th episode of Dynamite, and The Icon and Darby Allin successfully captured gold when they defeated Ricky Starks and Big Bill to become the new AEW World Tag Team Champions.
As March 3rd loomed ever closer, the pair found themselves embroiled in a feud with The Young Bucks, and shortly after a confrontation between Allin and the Bucks on the February 14th episode of Dynamite, it was made official that Matthew and Nicholas Jackson would serve as The Icon’s final opponents at Revolution.
The match served as the main event of the show, and the highly-praised spectacle drew some controversy when Darby Allin dove off a ladder through a pane of glass. Despite his injuries, Allin was able to finish the match, and only required 12 stitches to close his wounds.
Speaking in a new interview with Superstar Crossover, Allin reflected on his insane dive, saying it was his idea to make sure the match was as epic as possible.
“That was my sole idea (using glass during Sting’s final match). I think that I was like, ‘Man, this is Sting’s last match. You only get one shot at this. We have to go balls to the wall, all out crazy. What can we do?’ And then it’s like, I just thought of that. I don’t know why that but I just thought of that.”
“There Was Ideas Of Fire” – Darby Allin On Sting’s Retirement Match
Continuing, Allin outlined scrapped plans to use fire in the match, but said that ultimately the pane of glass was enough. According to the star, it’s important to show fans that the danger in his stunts is very real.
“Well, there was ideas of fire. But… I think the glass was pretty much — there’s no way of faking glass. Unless you use sugar glass but, I ain’t gonna play with that. Give me the good stuff and I think with wrestling, everything I do in wrestling, there’s no holes through it, you can’t see through it. Me getting thrown down a flight of steps at Daily’s Place by Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky, that sucked. That’s cement stairs. But I don’t want anyone to just, ‘Ah, there was a padding.’ Nah. No.”
