Daniel Bryan believes Roman Reigns has the advantage going into their Universal Championship match at WWE Fastlane on March 21st.
In a recent interview with Bleacher Report, the multi-time WWE Champion spoke about how his upcoming bout with the ‘Tribal Chief’ is different to the last time the two faced off in singles competition at Fastlane in 2015. At that event, in a match to determine the number one contender for Brock Lesnar’s WWE World Heavyweight Championship, Reigns had never held a major championship in the company while Bryan was already a three-time WWE Champion.
Now, however, Reigns is firmly established in the main event scene. He has held the WWE Championship three times and is in his second reign as Universal Champion, this is on top of having been in the main event of WrestleMania four times to Bryan’s one.
“It’s crazy because somehow, despite the time, it feels like a continuation of what happened in 2015 a little bit, but he’s much more established now. It’s different. It feels to me more like I’m the underdog in this one, much more than I was the underdog before. This one feels like he’s got a ton of momentum on his side. And in a lot of people’s eyes, he’s the most interesting character in WWE.
“As opposed to in the 2015 match at Fastlane, people weren’t really sure what to make of him yet. They weren’t quite sure yet. Now, he’s firmly entrenched in his role. He knows exactly who he is as a performer, and he doesn’t take anybody’s crap.”
In 2016, Bryan was forced to retire due to concussion-related medical reasons. However, he made a triumphant return to the ring at WrestleMania 34 in 2018. He says he has been waiting for an opportunity to face Reigns again ever since.
“I’m excited. This is the match I have been looking forward to most since I came back. I thought when I came back, there’s a couple of really big matches I want to knock out of the park, and at the top of the list is Roman Reigns.”
