Dakota Kai has admitted that it was sometimes tough to stay motivated towards the end of her run with NXT.
After initially making her debut in NXT in 2015, Dakota Kai signed her first full-time WWE contract in late 2016. She went on to compete in the first Mae Young Classic the following year before attempting to establish herself as a regular presence on NXT programming.
Over the next five years the star overcame a number of serious knee injuries to win the NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles twice alongside Raquel Gonzalez (Rodriguez) while featuring heavily on the show.
However, Kai was released by WWE in April 2022 after failing to get called up to the main roster.
Fast-forward to SummerSlam and the star made a shock reappearance alongside Bayley and IYO SKY.
Speaking on a recent episode of The Sessions with Renee Paquette, Dakota Kai discussed the end of her run in NXT, revealing that it wasn’t always easy to stay motivated. The star admitted she felt that she had done everything that she could on the brand, and was unsure about where to take her character next.
“I mean, absolutely, especially near the tail end of my NXT run, you know, and I understand how this business works. And I know that not everyone is given like a participation award. But I understand, and I also understand, you know, the championship matches that I had that, you know, people were like, oh maybe [it’s time]. It’s like times I’ve been here for so long and like it not happening. Like I understand how the business works. I’m not like I should have got that.
Like, it’s all stories at the end of the day, and they all lead somewhere, they should all lead somewhere. But especially in that last year, I really, after I’d sort of done everything that the glass ceiling had allowed me to do so to speak, I was more like, okay, so like, what else should I do?
Like, I guess I can change my character and sort of, you know, do something on that line. And then it sort of was creative, and I liked that I really enjoyed changing it up a little bit. But then it also sort of went down the same path and like, okay, like I’ve done that now, not done another championship, like headed from a championship story. And we held the Tag Team Championships for less than 24 hours apiece.
But yeah, I guess it just like gets a little bit it’s hard to stay motivated, but again, I know how the business is so yeah, coming back to this is insane. It’s like, it’s beautiful.”
After her shock appearance at SummerSlam, Kai teamed with IYO SKY in the Women’s Tag Team Title Tournament. The pair have impressed thus far and will meet Raquel Rodriguez and Aliyah in the finals.
