Dakota Kai has turned her back on long-time friend and tag team partner Raquel Gonzalez.
The two women joined forces back in February 2020 at NXT TakeOver: Portland when a returning Gonzalez interfered in the Street Fight between Kai and Tegan Nox, driving the latter through a table.
In the months that followed Gonzalez acted as Dakota Kai’s bodyguard, keeping her out of harms way and helping her win a number of matches. The two eventually began teaming together in the ring, going on to win the first ever Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic at NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day in early 2021.
A month later the pair were crowned the inaugural NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions, although they lost the belts the same night to Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart. However, Gonzalez had bigger prizes on her mind, winning the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver with Kai by her side.
As Gonzalez reigned supreme over the women’s division, Kai excelled in her role as wingman, that is until the most recent episode of the show.
On July 27th, both women came to the ring reflecting on how dominant Gonzalez has been. Gonzalez said that with Kai by her side no one can stop her. As she posed with the championship, Kai attacked the champion from behind, leaving her laying. The segment closed with Kai raising the title above a stricken Gonzalez.
This is of course not the first time that Dakota Kai has turned on one of her friends as she famously attacked Teagan Nox in 2019. A beatdown, which in a strange twist of fate led to the Street Fight between the pair which saw Kai and Gonzalez join forces for the first time.
