A current champion has taken credit for Cody Rhodes’ win at WWE Night of Champions.
Last night, Cody Rhodes came out on top and was crowned the new WWE King of the Ring. It was a huge win for The American Nightmare, and it now guarantees him a title shot at SummerSlam. Many will feel he deserved the win, but one current champion has decided to take credit.
The current champion in question is one-half of the World Tag Team Champions, Xavier Woods of The New Day. For context, Woods won the King of the Ring tournament back in 2021. Taking to X, the 38-year-old reminded everyone of this achievement, claiming he is the reason why the tournament is back.
He then went on to mock Rhodes, calling him the “golden child” and sarcastically claiming that he needed another title shot more than anyone else.
I’m here to say that there are less than 30 men in the history of humanity that have the ability to say that they won the King of the Ring tournament, and I am one of them. So, to everybody, once again, you’re welcome, especially…especially to the golden child Cody Rhodes, because we all know that he needed another reason to get back in line to fight for that title. He couldn’t have done that any other way. Nobody could’ve used that spot more than him,”

At the end of the day, Woods may take credit for Rhodes’ win, but that isn’t something the latter will care about. After all, he has a championship match at the Biggest Party of the Summer to prepare for.
Cody Rhodes made history at WWE Night of Champions
As mentioned above, Woods can take credit for bringing back the King of the Ring tournament, but he cannot for Cody Rhodes’ historic victory. That’s right, The American Nightmare furthered his legacy at Night of Champions, joining a select group of individuals in a unique category.
Alongside Ken Shamrock and Harley Race, Rhodes is now only the third man in history to have won the NWA Worlds Championship and the King of the Ring tournament. It’s a huge honor, and one that surely cements his place in pro wrestling history.
