The fifth and final match of NXT TakeOver 31 has now been confirmed by WWE: Isaiah ‘Swerve’ Scott will once again challenge Santos Escobar for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship.
The two have been embroiled in a feud dating all the way back to April, when Swerve was the only competitor to defeat the leader of Legado Del Fantasma in the Cruiserweight Championship tournament – whilst Escobar was still under his masked alias, El Hijo del Fantasma.
Interestingly, Escobar has already defeated Scott in a match for the title before, headbutting the challenger with a loaded luchadore mask to retain the championship just four weeks ago. Scott managed to pin the champion the following week in a 6-Man Tag Street Fight, however, defeating the trio of Escobar; Wilde and Mendoza alongside now-NXT Tag Team Champions Breezango, allowing himself to earn this second chance at the gold.
Since defeating Drake Maverick in the final of the Cruiserweight Championship tournament in May, Escobar has only defended the title once – in the aforementioned TV match against Scott. Therefore, this will be his first defence – and first appearance ever – at an NXT TakeOver event.
