AEW is currently riding high thanks to its first pay-per-view of 2023, Revolution.
The event received praise across the board from fans as well as critics with a number of performers earning plaudits for their work.
However, there was one particularly divisive match on the show and that was the Texas Death Match between Jon Moxley and Hangman Adam Page. Their rivalry had been building for a number of months and both men were determined to do whatever it took to defeat the other.
During the match, both men bled heavily and used an incredible variety of weapons to try and destroy each other. Moxley cut Page open with a fork, while barbed wire wrapped around chairs and tables was used with great abandon. At one point, Moxley even delivered a stomp to Page onto a brick. The end of the match came with Page hanging Moxley from the top rope with a thick chain wrapped around his throat, causing for the former WWE star to submit.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has awarded the match five stars.
“It was gruesome. I usually hate these kind of matches but it was billed as Texas death and it was so ridiculously well done.”
AEW’s Latest Blood-Soaked Offering Didn’t Impress Everyone
Jim Cornette was less impressed with the action, suggesting that Jon Moxley needs a mental evaluation. In his damning criticism of the clash, Cornette fumed that both stars should be fired for having this “embarrassment to professional wrestling.”
