Concern Within WWE That Planned SummerSlam Match Won’t Take Place

WWE SummerSlam 2021

With SummerSlam just a matter of days away, it appears that one of the show’s marquee matches may be in jeopardy.

At the summer spectacular on August 21st, Bianca Belair is scheduled to defend her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Sasha Banks in a huge WrestleMania rematch. However, there is now concern within WWE that the match will be unable to take place.

A new report from Mike Johnson of PWInsider notes that “several sources” within WWE have “expressed concern” over the match-up. The report comes after Banks and Belair missed a second consecutive WWE live event over the weekend. The pair initially missed a show in Charlotte, North Carolina on August 14th, before also not appearing in Columbia, South Carolina a day later.

The missed appearances were put down to “unforeseen circumstances.”

At time of writing there has been no official statement from WWE regarding SummerSlam.

After Sasha Banks returned to WWE on July 30th, The Boss immediately declared her intention to face Belair. Prior to disappearing from WWE television, Banks lost her Women’s Championship to Belair at WrestleMania 37.

After initially aligning with her rival, Banks attacked the champion upon her return. The following week, Banks explained that she was coming back to take out Belair and regain her SmackDown Women’s Title.

Speaking on Talking Smack after a raucous contract signing on the August 13th edition of SmackDown, the EST of WWE had some fighting talk for the challenger.

Belair said that she was done with Banks, adding that she “might just retire” the former champion in Las Vegas.
