A potential deal between WWE and Cody Rhodes remains on the cards, even though the creative team were told to stop working on a potential WrestleMania match.
The situation between WWE and Cody Rhodes remains far from clear-cut. Following recent reports that talks between the two sides had broken down, it was noted nothing had really changed regarding a deal.
There had also been claims that Rhodes was in-line to appear at WrestleMania 38, squaring off against Seth Rollins.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has noted that while it was thought a deal was imminent, the creative team were made aware that nothing was certain.
“WWE had its creative set up for a secret debut of Rhodes imminently, as in the next week or so, regarding how he was debuting and a match that has been confirmed would be with Seth Rollins at WrestleMania. But those in the company involved at the high level have said that they don’t know what happened nor has it for sure fallen through as talks were ongoing during the week and he still could debut imminently.
The creative team was only told that it was not 100 percent that he was coming in, when they believed it was a done deal with the key parts of creative having already been worked out for him to debut.”
This led to creative being told to hold off on work regarding a Seth Rollins vs. Cody Rhodes match, before stopping altogether. Although it is not a “dead deal.”
The report adds that Rhodes has a number of options and offers available. It is said that the situation is more akin to Bryan Danielson leaving WWE when his contract expired, rather than Brian Pillman’s acrimonious departure from WCW and switch to the WWF via ECW in the mid-1990’s. Furthermore, it’s suggested that Rhodes may simply be trying to secure himself a better deal by holding off on signing.
“The terminology we were given from the WWE side was that they believe that Rhodes not signing a WWE deal is either him angling for a better deal with the idea WWE wants everything it can put on for WrestleMania so there is leverage involved. Or it could be that Rhodes is playing a Brian Pillman game (which even Rhodes hinted about ibn one AEW TV interview) or that the deal is not going to happen.”
Cody Rhodes announced that he and wife Brandi had left AEW on February 15th, after the American Nightmare’s contract expired at the tail end of 2021. Rhodes last wrestled on January 26th where he was defeated by Sammy Guevara in a Ladder Match for the TNT Championship.
