Cody Rhodes got one of the biggest re-debuts in WWE history when he returned at WrestleMania 38 and now says other rumoured plans for him were never in the works.
Rhodes and his wife Brandi stunned the wrestling world in early 2022 when it was announced that the pair were leaving AEW. In addition to their on-screen roles, Brandi Rhodes had acted as the company’s Chief Brand Officer while Cody was one of the promotion’s Executive Vice Presidents and was a key component in the company coming into being.
But if all roads lead to Rome, then all wrestling roads led Cody Rhodes to return home to WWE, the company he left in 2016. The American Nightmare’s return to WWE has much-hyped but never announced until he made his entrance to face Seth Rollins inside AT&T Stadium at WrestleMania 38.
Now speaking on the Out of Character Podcast, Cody Rhodes has touched on some of the rumours that surrounded his WWE return, dismissing them by saying he was always meant to come back at WrestleMania:
“As far as my understanding goes, the plan was always WrestleMania. Nothing was ever considered. At one point, I saw people talking about [debuting in] Jacksonville [on Monday Night Raw] and that was a no. Again, it’s not about leaving, it was about returning and the place to do it was at the Showcase of the Immortals, at the biggest stage there is in what we do, undisputed is WrestleMania.”
“And there was a lot of synergy and love over the fact that it was Dallas, Texas, and that was where I had my last WrestleMania with the ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship.”
Cody Rhodes was successful in his WWE return as he defeated Seth ‘Freaking’ Rollins but the former Universal Champion will get his chance to exact revenge when the two men meet once more at WrestleMania Backlash.
