Cody Rhodes Hypes Battle Of The Belts – “It Can’t Be A B+ Show”

TNT Champion Cody Rhodes is looking forward to the first TNT special of a new era in AEW and says all hands are on deck to ensure Battle Of The Belts is a first-rate show.

A new dawn is coming in AEW as their flagship Wednesday night show heads to the mothership of TBS in 2022. As part of the new deal with their broadcast partners, AEW will still produce quarterly specials to air on TNT throughout the year on Saturday nights. The first of these takes place on January 8th in the form of Saturday Fight Night – Battle Of The Belts.

One man looking forward to the event is current three-time TNT Champion Cody Rhodes who will be defending his title against the man he beat for the gold, Sammy Guevara, on January the 8th.

Speaking to FITE In Focus, Cody Rhodes talked about his excitement for the event and how he and the other EVPs in the company won’t let the show be anything less than the highest quality:

“I am really excited that Tony named it Battle of the Belts because it’s right there in the name. I disliked this in wrestling, this is really across the board, not speaking anything specifically when a belt has been tarnished and they have lost to their value.”

“If you talk to wrestlers, we love our belts. Most wrestlers who are worth their salt have their own display of the belts they have ever won and it’s a significant thing. No different than Hollywood when you win an Academy Award. It’s unique in that sense. And him naming it Battle of the Belts and put the emphasis on the titles. I am not sure if all titles will be defended in this very first TNT special.”

“We do know that with just that in mind, it being the very first special that we are doing as part of the new contract, knowing us, me, Kenny, The Bucks, and Tony, that’s not one we can leave to, we are not capable, we are not able at this point to have a B+ show.”

The only other match confirmed at the time of writing for Battle Of The Belts is the AEW Women’s World Championship match which sees Dr. Britt Baker defend her title for the sixth time against the inaugural champion, Riho.

The other titles in AEW will be in sharp focus just 3 days ahead of Battle Of The Belts on Dynamite. The first-ever TBS Champion will be crowned when Jade Cargill faces Ruby Soho in the tournament final. The AEW Tag Team Championship will also be up for grabs as The Lucha Brothers defend the title against Jurassic Express.

Hangman Adam Page will have his second defence as AEW World Champion on Dynamite as he faces Bryan Danielson in a rematch of their bout from Winter Is Coming. That match went to a sixty-minute time limit draw and this rematch will have judges in ringside to determine a winner should the same thing happen again.
