Cody Rhodes has revealed that he won’t settle for anything less than a convincing win over AJ Styles at WWE Backlash.
Following on from his victory over Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, Rhodes now begins his first reign as WWE Champion. Very much a full-time champion, Rhodes has appeared across Raw and SmackDown multiple times following the victory and has defended the title multiple times on European tours. However, Rhodes’ next challenge against a first-time-ever opponent is one where he knows he has to prove himself once again.
On May 4th, Rhodes will defend the title against AJ Styles, who has held just about the top championship in just about every promotion around the world. While this is a dream match to many, including Rhodes, the champion knows his next defence can’t leave any questions remaining.
Appearing on the Cheap Heat podcast, Rhodes described the match as a ‘must dominate’ encounter and is out to prove that he is the right man to represent the company in the new era:
“I told AJ Styles, this is a dream match for some people, sure. To me, it’s a legit must win. Not just must win, but must dominate. Must show something. Whether you loved Roman or didn’t like Roman, Roman has been your champ for three years. Now we’re looking, here is the guy closing the shows. How is he going to close the shows? What is he going to be like? Was it just for that moment or is there more?
I’d like to let people know there is so much more meat on the bone. There is so much more to me and this run is the chance to validate it. It’s the mindset of ‘you’re never doing enough. Have to keep going.’ Everyone I know who is successful has that mindset and that’s where I’m at.”
Cody Rhodes Admits He Has Considered Major Change
Now over 2 years into his return to WWE, Rhodes has become the top star in the company and receives one of the loudest reactions at every show. Although his popularity shows no signs of slowing down, Cody Rhodes is aware that the bubble can burst and is open to a massive change in his WWE career.
In another interview, Cody Rhodes discusses his recent move from Raw to SmackDown.
