Cody Rhodes has lifted the lid on his relationship with Triple H and how The Game will hopefully respect what he was trying to do in AEW.
In August 2019 it was announced that NXT would be moving to the USA Network and broadcast on Wednesday nights. This put the now two-hour show in direct competition with AEW Dynamite, sparking talk among fans of a ‘Wednesday Night War’ between the two promotions.
However, after being regularly beaten in the ratings by Dynamite, NXT moved to Tuesday nights in April 2021. By September the entire brand was relaunched as NXT 2.0 and the focus shifted to once again be a developmental brand rather than a genuine third brand alongside Raw and SmackDown.
Speaking back in September, Triple H scoffed at the idea that AEW had ‘won’ commenting that they had only beaten WWE’s developmental brand. By this point, the dynamic between AEW and WWE had already shifted with Cody Rhodes heading back to WWE. Something made even more interesting given Triple H’s new role as head of creative and the fact that the American Nightmare had openly taken jabs at The Game during his time away from the company.
Despite this, in a new interview with Ariel Helwani, Cody Rhodes explained that he has a great relationship with Triple H and has enjoyed working with him. He added that although things were previously “contentious” between WWE and AEW while he was with the latter, he hopes Triple H would respect what he was trying to do.
“So far, A+ in terms of — I hope this isn’t too divulgant, but nothing has been forced. I’m not trying to force my ideas or a friendship. He’s not trying, everything that he has said to me, or that we’ve talked about has been very deliberate. I get the sense that he’s expecting me to hit a homerun. Every time. Okay, I’ve had great education and great experience, I want to go out there and do that every time, and we’ve yet to really hit a roadbump.
They’re gonna come, I keep using differnt sports analogies, but we’re gonna fumble the ball, we’re gonna have these moments. They’re gonna come, but right now it’s been a very good relationship. It’s not performative.
You call the play and I’m going to go out there and try and do the damn thing and I’ve really enjoyed that.
I don’t think there was necessarily bad blood, but that was a contentious thing on Wednesdays in a way for while, and if anything I hope he would look at that and respect the hustle — What I was out there trying to do then, was for everybody.”
Cody Rhodes Meets Sami Zayn On Raw
On the February 13th episode of WWE Raw, Sami Zayn and Cody Rhodes finally came face to face. Zayn stormed the ring from the crowd and called out the American Nightmare. In another passion-filled promo segment, Zayn asked Rhodes whether he really believed he could beat Roman Reigns as he isn’t sure.
Rhodes proceeded to fire up Zayn, telling him to finish his story and that he didn’t want to see him on Raw next week, he wants to see him at WrestleMania.
