Cody Rhodes Brings Back WWE Winged Eagle Championship On Saturday Night’s Main Event [Video]

The Specific Reason Cody Rhodes Wants To See Steve Austin Return To WWE

Cody Rhodes has brought back nostalgia.

Competing on the vintage and retro ‘Saturday Night’s Main Event’, Cody Rhodes faced off against Kevin Owens in the final match of the night. After Owens entered, Cody Rhodes stunned the fans by bringing back the ‘Winged Eagle’ Championship.

As Rhodes entered the arena with the retro title, the crowd erupted in joy. However, it was not only the live crowd that was cheering. The internet exploded with shock, and the moment quickly spread like wildfire on the web.

After a hard-fought victory against Owens at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Rhodes was able to snatch the victory away from The Prizefighter. With two referees rapidly taken down as collateral damage, Rhodes played a little dirty, and dropped Owens with a Cross-Rhodes on a steel chair, to earn the pinfall victory.

The Winged-Eagle Championship is arguably one of the most popular and respectable versions of the World title, and Rhodes was finally able to hold it around his waist. A championship held by some of the greats, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Rhodes has now added himself to that list. The title was first introduced in 1988 and later retired in 1998.

Before his match at Saturday Night’s Main Event, Triple H had presented Cody Rhodes with the belt for one night only, symbolizing the company and Rhodes’ rich legacy. While Rhodes retained his title, it was Chelsea Green who won a brand new championship.

Chelsea Green Crowned First-Ever WWE Women’s United States Championship

In the second last match of the night, Chelsea Green defeated Michin to become the inaugural Women’s United States Champion. With little help from Piper Niven, Chelsea Green was able to finish the match against Michin with an assisted โ€˜Un-pretty-herโ€™ from the top rope.

Green closed the night with Pyro going off and on top of Niven’s shoulder.
