Cody Rhodes Breaks Silence Over AEW Departure

Cody Rhodes

Cody Rhodes addressed his AEW departure for the first time since news broke that he and his wife were leaving the company.

News broke on February 15th that Cody Rhodes and his wife Brandi would be leaving AEW, a move that shocked many as the two were integral to the formation of the company and two of its top stars. Cody was serving as one of the company’s Executive Vice Presidents, and Brandi was their Chief Branding Officer.

After the initial social media statements announcing the couple’s departures, both Cody and Brandi Rhodes have stayed quiet amidst the rumors and speculation swirling about their future destinations and reasons for leaving.

However, when a fan responded to Cody’s statement and said that they would no longer be able to watch AEW without Cody – the face of the company, in this person’s estimation – involved, the American Nightmare took to Twitter to answer the fan and encourage them to continue watching, saying that wrestling is thriving as people continue to put in work.

“I’d encourage you to still watch it – I was very lucky that my hard work led me to be that face, but I wasn’t alone

Nick/Matt/Kenny/Chicken/Jericho/MJF/Hang were as well, and all the new girls and guys putting in a shift now as well

Wrestling is thriving”

While Cody Rhodes was removed from the AEW Dynamite intro the Wednesday after he departed the company, he was still mentioned multiple times on commentary as a previous member of a Dog Collar Match with the late Brodie Lee. This commentary was relevant as CM Punk will face MJF in a Dog Collar Match at AEW Revolution in March.

Cody Rhodes last competed for AEW on the January 26th Beach Break edition of Dynamite, losing to Sammy Guevara in a quest to become the Undisputed TNT Champion. Guevara became the interim champion when he defeated Dustin Rhodes at Battle of the Belts after Cody was unable to compete due to COVID-19 concerns.

Cody Rhodes is reportedly heading to WWE

Back in January it was reported that Cody Rhodes was working without a contract and was technically a free agent. The report explained that his deal with AEW had expired at the end of 2021.

After news of his departure from AEW, reports began speculating as to what was next for the American Nightmare, and it seems that he is WWE-bound. In fact, one report states that WWE has significant plans in place for when he makes his way to the company.
