Cody Rhodes Addresses Comparisons To “The Boys” Superhero Homelander, Confirms Inspiration Behind Signature Attire

Cody Rhodes Addresses Comparisons To

Cody Rhodes has acknowledged the comparisons to a controversial superhero that would not be suitable for WWE.

With short blond hair and an entrance jacket inspired by the American flag, Rhodes’ likeness to The Boys main antagonist Homelander has become a running joke in the wrestling community. With Rhodes first appearing in the jacket and patriotic attire around the same time that the first season of the popular series aired in 2019, some have speculated if the look was at all inspired by Homelander. Despite the similarities, Rhodes has confirmed the origins of his look.

Speaking with Chris Van Vliet, Rhodes stated that while he is a huge fan of The Boys, the attire was not based on Homelander and gave his thoughts on Anthony Starr’s portrayal as the psychotic character:

“I love The Boys. It’s perfect for the time. However, with all the love I have for The Boys and his [Anthony Starr’s] performance as Homelander, the entire cast, and their production is first class, what a production. The robe is not based on it. The robe is based on military dress uniforms.

It’s the little bit of scales, the gold on my bigger robe that has the eagles and of course, the blonde hair and I think the AEW run where people thought I’m pretending to be a good guy but I’m actually a bad guy, which maybe it was what was happening? I think that’s where it really became ‘Is he gonna go full Homelander?’ Truthfully, Homelander the character is a terrible human being.”

Leaning further into the meme, Cody Rhodes recently went “full Homelander” during a recent commercial to promote the show.

Cody Rhodes Addresses Infamous Promo

Much like Homelander, Rhodes is a master of the mic and is able to rally the fans behind him, albeit with better intentions than the leader of The Seven. While Cody Rhodes has been family-friendly for the most part, he also admitted that he may have “crossed the line” with a certain promo.
