Inaugural AEW TNT Champion Cody regained the title from Brodie Lee on last night’s Dynamite, becoming the first two-time TNT Champion in the process.
Cody defeated Lee in a brutal dog collar match that turned into a blood bath when both men were busted open during the course of the bout.
The contest evoked memories of the classic Roddy Piper vs Greg Valentine dog collar match from NWA Starrcade ’83, which was clearly by design as AEW had Valentine in attendance as an homage to the bout.
Cody scored the win in just under 20 minutes when he wrapped the chain around Lee’s face and hit Crossroads to get the pin and end a cracker of a bout.
It was a stark contrast to the match in August where Cody dropped the belt to Lee, which had lasted just three minutes and was essentially an extended squash, designed to write Cody off the show with a storyline injury while he filmed his new TV series Heels with Stephen Amell.
Flanked by his posse, which included wife Brandi Rhodes, brother Dustin Rhodes and mentor Arn Anderson, Cody cut his traditional post-match emotional promo after the bout, where he talked about how he did this for the fans and said he wanted to defend the title on next week’s Dynamite anniversary show.
That prompted Orange Cassidy to turn up and the pair exchanged thumbs up as ‘Freshly Squeezed’ apparently accepted Cody’s challenge.
