AEW President Tony Khan has offered a fresh update on his injured World Champion CM Punk.
At AEW Double or Nothing CM Punk defeated Hangman Adam Page to claim the AEW World Championship. The emotional win marked the first time that Punk had held World Championship gold in almost a decade.
However, Punk’s joy proved to be short-lived as on the following episode of Rampage less than a week later, he revealed that he had a “broken wheel” and required surgery. Despite initially fearing that he would have to relinquish his newly won World Title, that was quickly proven not be the case.
On the June 8th edition of Dynamite, Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone and Excalibur announced that Punk’s surgery had been successful.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Tony Khan offered a further update. He explained that while the injury was a setback, he was excited for Punk to return.
“Speaking about Punk’s injury, Khan said, “It is a setback, but we’re really excited to get CM Punk back. He’s going to have surgery here quickly and I’m very nervous, but pretty optimistic because he’s going to be seeing one of the top doctors in the entire world and someone really renowned in sports medicine. We were fortunate to get him in quickly. We’re excited to get him back.”
With CM Punk out of action, a new Interim World Champion will be crowned at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door. On the most recent episode of Dynamite, Jon Moxley won his way into the bout at the super-show with a ferociously hard-hitting win over Kyle O’Reilly.
With victory, Jon Moxley will face the winner of the clash at New Japan Dominion between Hiroshi Tanahashi and Hirooki Goto.
