CM Punk has responded to the moment a fan offered him a beer during his entrance on an episode of AEW Rampage back in September.
During his entrance Punk performed his now customary stage dive into the crowd. As Punk gathered himself to get back on the ramp, a fan offered him his beer. Despite the good intentions behind the gesture, it led to a somewhat awkward interaction between the pair as Punk famously doesn’t drink alcohol.
Appearing on ET Canada, Punk addressed the comical yet awkward standoff describing it as “hilarious.”
“The thing that was going through my mind in that moment was, ‘Man, this guy is lucky I’m not a heel right now.’ But it was a funny moment for me,” Punk admitted. “I was just like, ‘This is hilarious.’ Sometimes it’s not about the gift, the gesture is more important.”
CM Punk made his return to the ring at AEW All Out, having not competed inside the squared circle for more than seven and a half years. At the event the former WWE Champion overcame Darby Allin after an impressive showing, which was widely praised in the days after the show.
Reflecting on his approach to that match, Punk said that he wanted to perform as if he had never been away.
“I think it was just quieting that voice in my head that doubted anything. Cardio is fine, timing is fine. I was always a storyteller. You’ll never see me do a triple-jump moonsault to the floor or anything like that,” Punk explained. “It’s more about tugging on people’s heartstrings and getting them to care about me as a human being, really. If I have an advantage over anybody, I think that’s one of them. I have this rare connection with the crowd.
“I just think I need more reps. I need to get out there more in front of a live audience and wrestle. I’ll be back to form in no time; I think I haven’t missed a beat. That was kind of the goal, to go out there and make it look like I’ve been wrestling last week. I think, mission accomplished. I just want to get out there and hear the crowd more. That’s all I want to do is be in that moment.”
After dispatching Allin at All Out, Punk has become wrapped up in a feud with Team Taz. This led to a match between Punk and Powerhouse Hobbs at AEW Rampage Grand Slam. On the show held at New York’s Arthur Ashe Stadium, Punk defeated Hobbs in his first television match in seven years.
