On the November 23rd edition of AEW Dynamite The Elite took on Death Triangle in the second match of their best of seven series. To make things even more interesting, the show was held in CM Punk’s hometown of Chicago.
This marked the first time that AEW had returned to Chicago since CM Punk launched into his now infamous tirade at the post-All Out media scrum in September. In amongst Punk’s verbal assault he took aim at Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks. This led to a fight breaking out backstage which saw everyone involved suspended. While Punk remains absent, The Elite returned to action at AEW Full Gear on November 19th.
The Elite Mock CM Punk On Dynamite
The Full Gear crowd heartily chanted “f*ck CM Punk” throughout The Elite’s defeat to Death Triangle in what was later announced to be the first match in a best of seven series. The chants were later highlighted further on the most recent of Being The Elite.
Unsurprisingly, Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks were heavily booed on Dynamite as fans chanted for their hometown hero. During the match itself the trio amped up the barbs towards the former AEW World Champion with Omega performing Punk’s GTS finishing move. The Best Bout Machine also bit PAC, a reference to being bitten by Ace Steel during the brawl at All Out. To top things off Matt Jackson deliberately failed to execute a Buckshot Lariat and even clutched his foot afterwards, in a nod to Punk failing to execute the move at Double or Nothing.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that those close to Punk were less than impressed with The Elite’s antics during the match.
“Man, I know there’s people close to CM Punk, boy were they not happy with that six-man tag match.”
In the end it was Death Triangle who picked up the win to take a 2-0 lead in the series.
