With AEW and NJPW’s Forbidden Door event just around the corner, one dream match fans can tick off their bucket list is CM Punk vs. KENTA.
Ever since the announcement was made of All Elite Wrestling and New Japan Pro-Wrestling finally co-promoting an event, fan speculation has run wild as to which matches could – and should – take place at the aptly-titled Forbidden Door on 26 June. CM Punk vs. KENTA, however, likely won’t be one of them.
Despite their in-ring similarities, namely Punk’s use of the Go To Sleep (a move that the former Hideo Itami originated), neither man has any interest in facing the other. ‘The Best in the World’ was the first to turn down the thought of a match vs. the former NEVER Openweight Champion while chatting to Comic Book’s Connor Casey (h/t Comic Book):
“You guys are heading back to Chicago for AEWxNJPW: Forbidden Door on June 26. There’s a guy over in New Japan that keeps calling you out on Twitter every chance he gets and that’s KENTA. Does that match interest you at all?”
Punk’s answer to Casey’s question was a simple “no”. That he didn’t expand on his response doesn’t give a clear indication as to whether or not the former WWE Champion was being serious, but KENTA’s social media response tells a different story, referencing CM Punk’s utilisation of the Go To Sleep:
“Hahaha. Perfect answer. Zero interest and keep using MY finish. What a garbage [three laughing face emojis].”

KENTA has previously appeared for All Elite Wrestling, being the first New Japan talent to do so. He jumped Jon Moxley from behind at the conclusion to Dynamite’s Beach Break special in February 2021, leading to KENTA and Kenny Omega defeating Moxley and Lance Archer in a Falls Count Anywhere match.
While the two Go To Sleep specialists won’t be colliding at Forbidden Door, expect announcements for the matches that will be going ahead to commence following Double or Nothing, if not before.
