CM Punk On If His Return Inspired AJ Lee’s WOW Superheroes Signing

AJ Lee Hugs CM Punk

CM Punk has given details about the circumstances around AJ Lee joining WOW Superheroes, and whether his own return to the squared circle influenced her decision.

The revived Women Of Wrestling (WOW) promotion announced the signing of AJ Lee at a press conference on October 7th. The former WWE Divas Champion will be an Executive Producer and Colour Commentator for the revived brand, which has been spearheaded by LA Lakers President Jeanie Buss.

Speaking on the ‘My Mom’s Basement’ podcast, Lee’s husband, AEW Star CM Punk, revealed details on how she came to be involved with WOW and whether his joining AEW had a part in it.

“I don’t want to put words in her mouth, but I think that’s just a happy coincidence. I had somebody reach out to me saying, ‘Hey, Jeanie Buss wants to talk to April,’ and I was like, ‘What?’ And April doesn’t know anything about sports. So I took the idea to her, and I was just like, ‘You have to at least take this meeting. Jeannie Buss is the most powerful woman in sports.’ In my mind, I was just doing cartwheels thinking of my wife talking to Jeanie Buss, and I thought that was super cool.

He went on to explain that Lee thought Buss’s offer was perfect for her, as it let her help the next generation of female wrestlers.

“And they had a great conversation, and Jeanie was just kind of kickstarting WOW. And it really just kind of fit into the stuff that April’s doing, writing, producing. So it really was just an idea presented to her that I think opened her up to ‘oh, sh*t. Yeah, this is actually perfect. I can help the next generation of female wrestlers with the creative side of stuff. I don’t have to get concussed. It’s excellent,’ so it really fit what she’s doing in her wheelhouse, and I’m super stoked she’s doing it.”

In the same interview, CM Punk also revealed how an encounter with Eddie Guerrero continues to inspire him with his work with younger wrestlers in AEW today.
