With the proposed bout between CM Punk and Hiroshi Tanahashi on ice due to Punk’s injury, the AEW Champion has now been invited to fight at Wrestle Kingdom.
At Double Or Nothing, CM Punk made history when he became only the fifth man to capture the AEW World Championship when he defeated Hangman Adam Page in the main event. On the following edition of Dynamite, Punk was in action as he teamed with FTR in a trios match to defeat The Gunn Club and ‘Platinum’ Max Caster. After the match, Punk addressed the upcoming Forbidden Door show before he was confronted by New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Ace, Hiroshi Tanahashi.
However, by the time Friday on Rampage rolled around, it was an emotional CM Punk who addressed the crowd, revealing that he needed surgery on his foot and would be out for an indeterminate amount of time. This put Punk’s dream match with Tanahashi on ice and cast doubt on his reign as AEW World Champion.
The situation with the title was cleared up later on as an AEW World Title Eliminator series was announced to crown an Interim AEW Champion in Punk’s absence. On Dynamite, a battle royal winner will face number one ranked star Jon Moxley in the main event. At NJPW’s Dominion show on June 12th, Hirooki Goto will face Tanahashi and the winners of the two matches will face off at Forbidden Door to crown the interim champion.
Now speaking to Tokyo Sports, Hiroshi Tanahashi has seemingly invited CM Punk to Wrestle Kingdom 17 in early January to finally face him one-on-one. Twitter user @golden_kuma translated Tanahashi’s comments as:
“Punk owes me one. I’d like to invite him to Japan. I’ve been to the US a lot, so come here with a special price. Tokyo Dome is a prestigious stage”
Tanahashi proposed @CMPunk to rerun the now cancelled dream match at NJPW's biggest show of the year, "1.4 Wrestle Kingdom"
