CM Punk Broke Major WWE Rule After Mentioning Forbidden Name During Promo

CM Punk represents WWE at Fanatics Fest NYC 2025

CM Punk made his name as one of the most outspoken pro wrestlers of the modern era. Now that he’s back with WWE, the former AEW World Champion has toned it down some, but he has continued to push the envelope, and new information points to one such situation involving two other controversial names.

The Voice of The Voiceless suffered a triceps injury in the 2024 Royal Rumble, but still feuded with Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre during their Road to WrestleMania XL. RAW on March 25, 2024 from the Allstate Arena near Punk’s hometown of Chicago featured a heated in-ring exchange between Punk and McIntyre.

The Scottish Psychopath touted how he’s always been The Chosen One, which was a moniker handed down by Vince McMahon during Drew’s first WWE run. Punk then fired back and made a viral McMahon mention without naming the WWE co-founder, who had left the company amid controversy months earlier.

“Chosen One… who chose you!? What was his name? You got the balls to say you’re The Chosen One… tell me, what paragon of good virtue chose you?,” CM Punk asked.

McIntyre was a bit speechless at the reference as McMahon had not been mentioned on WWE TV in some time. The crowd gasped and popped in reaction to the clear Mr. McMahon line. McIntyre did respond, only to say he can go toe-to-toe with anyone, even CM Punk. Drew later disclosed what he really wanted to say in the ring that night.

CM Punk’s Vince McMahon Mention On WWE RAW Was Not Planned

Vince McMahon was seen as a “no-go” in every situation when CM Punk referenced him on WWE RAW in March 2024. It was noted in a new Fightful Select Q&A that very few people have been absolute “no-gos” in WWE history, but ironically McMahon was on that list at one point.

Punk’s McMahon reference to Drew McIntyre was not scripted, according to multiple sources. It’s possible that these source claims are incorrect, but several people were not thrilled with this part of the Punk-McIntyre exchange that night.

Many of the top promos on WWE TV are scripted these days, even with a top talent like Punk or Seth Rollins. While certain Superstars are allowed some creative freedom, this particular instance was a situation where Punk reportedly made a decision to go way off-script.
