Dave Meltzer discussed the possibility of CM Punk making a return to AEW despite his recent firing from the company.
Punk’s dismissal from AEW came after he was involved in a physical altercation with Jack Perry at the All In event. While this incident led to his termination, In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer suggested that if WWE doesn’t sign Punk, AEW might consider bringing him back in the future to boost ratings if they are struggling with viewership.
However, Meltzer did clarify that while this could happen it would likely be met with strong backlash from the AEW locker room. Meltzer wrote:
WWE doesn’t need him, and there would be people arguing in both directions on him, but he would increase ratings, merchandise sales and overall business. If he doesn’t sign with WWE, it wouldn’t shock me if he even returns to AEW at some point, but admittedly there would be a ton of resistance to that.
Meltzer continued:
If WWE doesn’t sign him, I wouldn’t at all rule out AEW giving him another shot as crazy as that may sound today, for those same reasons, although that would be very difficult. This is a unique situation, but historically when top talent has a fall out with a promotion, and they can still draw, at some point time does heal all wounds and every company has its period when business isn’t good and they would be looking for any shot in the arm.
This report has sparked speculation among fans and insiders about what the future holds for CM Punk in professional wrestling. Punk’s impact on the industry has been significant in the past, and his potential return to AEW could have profound implications for the company and the industry as a whole.
