CM Punk will wrestle on the special AEW Rampage Grand Slam show, taking on Powerhouse Hobbs in his AEW television in-ring debut!
Less than two weeks removed from his victorious AEW in-ring debut at All Out, CM Punk’s next opponent has been revealed. Last week’s edition of Dynamite saw a war of words between Punk and Tazz, seemingly setting up a clash between ‘The Best In The World’ and the members of Team Tazz.
An attack from Hook and Hobbs on the most recent Dynamite saw Hobbs slam Punk into the announce table. Now, the veteran Chicago-native will have to overcome one of AEW’s biggest rising threats. At the time of writing, Powerhouse Hobbs is ranked #2 in the AEW Rankings; a win over a star of CM Punk’s calibre would undoubtedly see his stock rise even further.
For fans active on Twitter, the matchup may not be a big surprise. In February this year, CM Punk specifically listed both Powerhouse Hobbs and Team Tazz teammate Ricky Starks among the AEW talent he sees potential in. Notably, another name on the list was Punk’s first opponent in over seven years – Darby Allin.
The special edition of Rampage has been announced as a two hour show rather than the usual one hour. Taking place in Arthur Ashe Stadium, the show is expected to have an attendance of over 18,000 fans.
The 24th of September show will also see the return of the SuperKliq; Adam Cole and The Young Bucks will face off against Christian Cage, Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus in trios action. AEW’s biggest ever live audience will also be treated to Chris Jericho and Jake Hager taking on Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page.
CM Punk wrestling on Rampage Grand Slam will mark his first match on television since a 20th of January 2014 bout against now-fellow AEW employee Billy Gunn.
