During a recent appearance at Starrcast V, Claudio Castagnoli has revealed why he embraced his reputation of being one of the most underrated wrestlers in the world.
While some performers might feel that being perennially known as underrated is a negative, the new Ring of Honor World Champion has seemingly embraced that label.
Despite being spoken of highly by former rivals and fans, Castagnoli was never able to properly break though to the main event scene in WWE. On more than one occasion, the Swiss Superman appeared on the cusp of hitting the big time, but never quite got there.
Speaking during an appearance at Starrcast V with Chris Van Vliet for his Insight podcast, Castagnoli explained that while he never felt underrated, he takes the label as a compliment.
“I do appreciate the underrated label, but I feel, [At least my fans, thank you for being here] I don’t think they ever thought I was underrated, maybe underutilised, would be a better thing. I feel the underrated thing is kind of the best kept secret kind of vibe, and I really appreciate that because I’ve never been the one that goes out there and just tells everybody how great I am, I would rather go out there and show it, and it may take longer, but in the end you have a longer lasting effect.
To me, that is way more important, so the fact that I had so many people calling me underrated you I take that as a big compliment.”
During the conversation the star also discussed the build-up to his WWE exit, and why a promo from Johnny Gargano nudged him towards the exit.
