When Christian Cage stood across the ring from best friend Edge at the 2021 Royal Rumble it was a moment that wrestling fans thought they’d never see.
Both men had previously retired due to injury and many believed that their days inside the ring were over. Edge was forced to call time on his career in 2011, while Cage was forced to follow suit in 2014. But when Edge made his entrance at the 2020 Royal Rumble, everything changed. The Rated R Superstar was back and after a handful of one off appearances, Christian made his own triumphant return a year later. Not only that the pair got to share the a moment together in the ring, before Edge went on to win the match.
After Christian made his return, it was expected that he would remain with WWE as Edge had done, however, the former world champion had other ideas. The man once again known as Christian Cage signed with AEW in March making his debut at AEW Revolution.
Speaking to ET Canada’s Shakiel Mahjouri, Christian Cage recalled making the switch, explaining that he spoke with Edge about the move.
“I did talk to him about it and told him, you know, where my head was, what I was going to do. And, of course, what you do when your best friends, you support each other no matter what. And he understood that we both have some things that we want to accomplish. And we also understand that we have to go where you’re best served. That platform to do what it is that you want to do with, the let’s be honest here, we’re both closer to the end of our careers. We both thought they were over. But at this point, we are on limited time. So we have to maximize that time. And that’s kind of just really the only conversations that we’ve had about it.”
After appearing at Revolution, Cage made his in-ring debut for AEW on March 31st, taking on Frankie Kazarian. AEW newest big-name signing went on to reveal that he actually watched that match with Edge, commenting that his friend was happy for him.
“Yeah, I did, actually. So he’s actually staying at my house. Yeah, because obviously Smackdown and Raw are here in Tampa so we watched it together. He was very happy for me and was very complimentary of it. And of course, we always both kind of nit-pick and give each other constructive criticism and those sorts of things. But I think, for the most part, he felt the same way that I did. I don’t think it could have gone better for the first one back.”
After moving to AEW Christian Cage has appeared regularly on AEW Dynamite, most recently feuding with Team Taz.
Reflecting further on joining AEW on AEW Unrestricted, Christian named who he would have liked to have faced had he remained in WWE. Cage highlighted Kevin Owens for his passion before saying he thought he could have done something special with Sami Zayn.
Meanwhile after winning the 2021 Royal Rumble match, Edge made a triumphant return to the WrestleMania main event. With the Rated R Superstar faced off against Daniel Bryan and Universal Champion Roman Reigns in the main event of night two of WrestleMania 37.
