Chris Jericho has discussed reaching out to NJPW star Will Ospreay about crossing through the forbidden door into the world of All Elite Wrestling.
Jericho has been with AEW since its inception and was one of the key figures in making the company become a reality in its early days. The former Undisputed WWE Champion became the first-ever AEW World Champion in August 2019 at All Out and has since led his Inner Circle into memorable encounters with both The Elite and The Pinnacle.
Speaking on REINVENTED with Jen Eckhart, The Demo-God Chris Jericho says he reached out to former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion and New Japan Pro Wrestling star Will Ospreay about joining the upstart promotion:
“I’d love to see Will in AEW. I actually called him way, way back when we were first starting out to see what kind of interest he had. I think there are a lot of guys that want to work in Japan and spend time there, I know because I was one of them. I’ve been to Japan over 60 times in my career. There will come a time when Will decides he wants to work in his own country, I know he’s English, but in America, that idea is much more similar to England than Japan is. There’s something to be said about being a worldwide television superstar. You won’t get that working for New Japan Pro Wrestling. It’s great to be there, but the real big leagues lie in America. I would love to see Will working in America and I think at some point, that will probably happen.”
Will Ospreay was forced to relinquish his IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in May following a neck injury during his first defence of the belt against Shogo Takagi. The Englishman has recovered and is currently appearing on New Japan Stron shows in the United States while his United Empire partners The Great-O-Khan and Jeff Cobb compete in the G1 Climax.
