Chris Jericho has opened up on his least favourite WrestleMania match, saying it was “confusing and overbooked”.
Going into WrestleMania 16 in 2000, Kurt Angle was only a few months into his WWE career but was already riding high as a double champion having captured both the Intercontinental and European titles.
In the build-up to the Showcase Of the Immortals, however, the Olympic Gold Medallist got on the wrong side of both Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit, leading to a 2 Out Of 3 Falls match with both the titles on the line.
Speaking to Kenny McIntosh during the recent ‘The Jericho Chronicles’ tour of the UK with Inside The Ropes (via Talk Is Jericho), the leader of the Chris Jericho explained why he found the match “very confusing”.
“So this match was in Los Angeles and was very confusing, like I said, and I was really confused by the booking of the match. Because they had Chris winning the Intercontinental Championship in the first fall and then me winning the European title in the second fall.
“The European title was here, the Intercontinental Championship was here, it seemed like it should have been the other way around. It’s kind of like, you get your dessert and then you gotta eat the liver next, it was really kind of weird.
“But it was the way Vince wanted it to be. I remember, you think Kurt Angle and Benoit, Jericho in 2000, every guy in this match is just amazing. You would think the match should have been amazing too, it really wasn’t.
“I don’t think I’ve ever watched that match back and you guys might have but I remember kind of thinking that was kind of lame. It was too confusing and overbooked.”
Chris Jericho went on to describe the match and the aftermath as a “big swirling piece of crap” that is possibly his least favourite of all his WrestleMania appearances.
“I just never understood why the European Championship was second and the Intercontinental Championship was first. And then I lost the European title the next night to Eddie Guerrero because of Chyna and everything [was] just kind of a big swirling piece of crap down the toilet for that match.
“I would probably rate that match as possibly my least favourite Wrestlemania match, because of the story I just told you of what it was supposed to be, and then the potential for the match, but it never really came together in my opinion. There you go.”
During the same conversation, Chris Jericho explained the reasons behind his decision to leave WWE back in 2018.
