Chris Jericho – “Gimmick Matches Should Be The Product Of The Story”

Chris Jericho & MJF

On May 5th Chris Jericho will lead the Inner Circle into battle against The Pinnacle in the first ever Blood and Guts Match in AEW history.

The match itself will be a variation of the classic WarGames concept originally pioneered by Jim Crockett Promotions back in the late 1980’s. It will feature two rings, enclosed by a steel cage and wresters will enter at timed intervals.

Speaking to Wrestling Observer Radio ahead of the historic clash, Chris Jericho has compared the match to WWE’s famous Hell In A Cell. The first ever AEW World Champion said that Blood and Guts is the climax of a story, rather than just another gimmick match.

“I think that gimmick matches should be the product of the story, not the story being the product of the gimmick match. What I mean by that is when we first started doing Hell in a Cell, it was because the story demanded this hell. Now, we got the PPV coming up lets do a tag team match, we’ll do a women’s version, we’ll do a men’s version, it’s stupid. So the thing with Blood and guts, is that we had built this way back last year to be the blow-off with The Elite and The Inner Circle. That started on the very first episode of Dynamite. We almost made it to March 5th 2020, we got shut down on the 11th. We had to reconfigure and we went with the stadium stampede. But we didn’t want to do it for the sake of doing it.”

Jericho continued by saying that the story between the two warring factions is strong enough, and ready to take on the historic match.

“So now we have The Pinnacle and The Inner Circle, and there’s this vicious beatdown of The Inner Circle. Then we return and beat down them. With Blood and Guts on the horizon, we thought to do it sooner rather than later, because the storyline is there. And I think the promos we have done over the past 3-4 weeks have really put this into a different kind of stratosphere. But we are telling stories, sit back and enjoy the ride.”

Away from the Blood and Guts Match itself the special edition of Dynamite features a stacked card.
