A new report has given more insight into how and why Charlotte Flair vs. Iyo Sky was added to SmackDown.
As WWE SmackDown went on the air on July 21st it was reported that the show had been subject to late changes. For once, these had nothing to do with Vince McMahon. Initial reports noted that an in-ring segment had been scrapped and a match changed, due to someone being testing positive or being exposed to COVID-19.
A further report from Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio has now given more details on the situation. Meltzer noted that the match between Charlotte Flair and Iyo Sky was a last-minute decision, and replaced a match between Flair and Zelina Vega. Although Vega was at the show.
Additionally, an in-ring segment featuring Flair, Asuka, and Bianca Belair was also scrapped.
“So Charlotte Flair-IYO SKY was also thrown together at the end. There were a couple of people who were scheduled for the show who did not appear for, in some cases, for COVID-related reasons. Maybe not had COVID, but perhaps they were around it. So COVID reasons the show was changed. Charlotte and IYO Sky was a late replacement because that was not the original plan.”
Charlotte Flair To Challenge For Women’s Title Gold At SummerSlam
Charlotte Flair made her latest WWE return on the June 9th episode of SmackDown to challenge Women’s Champion Asuka. This upset Bianca Belair who had only recently lost the gold to the Japanese star and believed she should have been next in line for a rematch.
As the rivalry continued to escalate it became clear there was only one way to solve the conundrum.
It has now been announced that Flair and Belair will both challenge Asuka at SummerSlam.
