WrestleMania might be the ‘Grandest Stage Of Them All’ but this year it was a stage that wasn’t graced by The Queen, Charlotte Flair.
In a real sliding doors moment on March 22nd Charlotte Flair took to social media to address her recent absence from WWE, and in doing so, revealed that she had contracted COVID-19. Shortly after Flair posted the message, Rhea Ripley debuted on Monday Night RAW challenging RAW Women’s Champion Asuka to a match at WrestleMania. It was a match and title, Ripley would go on to win at the showpiece event.
However, while Ripley and Asuka were performing at WWE’s biggest event of the year, Flair was forced to watch on from the side-lines.
Appearing on the Cut To It podcast, Flair opened up about having to sit out the event. The Queen said that she was “crushed” after learning she wouldn’t be able to perform at the show.
“Your fellow co-workers feel bad, but at the same time, it’s a spot that’s open. It’s an opportunity. I missed WrestleMania this year due to COVID, I got it in March, and they were nervous that I wouldn’t be okay for WrestleMania in Tampa, so they immediately took me out and replaced me with another girl. It crushed me. I work every year for WrestleMania. It is our Super Bowl and the show I’ve always shined the most on. When they replaced me, you know (another girl) is thinking, ‘I’m sorry and sad Charlotte has COVID…but now I’m going to WrestleMania.’ It all comes full circle. If something doesn’t happen, it’s a break for the opponent that gets to come in. It all works out,”
Flair returned to Monday Night RAW the night after WrestleMania calling out everyone and everything in sight. In the months that followed she has feuded extensively with Rhea Ripley and more recently Nikki A.S.H.
Flair eventually regained the RAW Women’s Championship at Money In The Bank after finally defeating Ripley. However, the celebrations proved to be short-lived as Nikki A.S.H. cashed in her Money In The Bank contract the following night on RAW, pinning Flair.
The trio have continued to feud over the championship leading to a Triple Threat Match being announced for SummerSlam.
