Charlotte Flair – “It’s 2021 I Don’t Want To Share The Screen With My Dad”

Throughout the early part of her WWE career whenever Charlotte Flair was in action her Hall of Fame father Ric wasn’t too far behind. Although as Charlotte’s career blossomed and she truly ascended to main event status, his appearances became more and more infrequent.

That is until the early months of 2021 when Ric would return, but only to turn on his daughter by slowly aligning himself with Lacey Evans. Ric would appear at ringside and interfere in Charlotte’s matches before the storyline came to a somewhat abrupt end when Evans announced she was pregnant.

Evans later confirmed the storyline news and hasn’t been seen on WWE television since.

Speaking in a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, the 16-time world champion revealed that he “didn’t like” the storyline adding that Charlotte wasn’t a fan either.

Reflecting on the angle, ‘The Queen’ has had her say. In conversation with Hindustan Times, Charlotte explained that her frustration over the story was less to do with Evans more to do with being on-screen with her dad.

“It wasn’t so much about Lacey. It is very difficult with my dad. I had an extensive amount of time off for the first time ever in my career, I was eager and excited to come back and start fresh. I wanted to add layers to my characters as I felt stale. I wanted these changes. When my dad got brought into the picture, I was like man it’s 2021 and I don’t want to share the screen with my dad. I am Charlotte Flair now, I am no longer Ric Flair’s daughter, that’s Charlotte’s dad. I was like why I have to be on TV with my dad,”

Charlotte continued, explaining that while it might seem selfish she wants to establish herself as a performer away from her illustrious father.

“I don’t want anyone to think that is selfish, anyone would love to share screen with their dad. But if anyone’s followed my career, all I have done since day one is pave my own legacy. Yes, I do a lot of his personal trademarks but it is also to acknowledge me as a separate performer. So that’s why I was frustrated at home because selfishly I wanted the screen for myself and not with my dad.”

Since her most recent return, Flair has entered a feud with RAW Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley and Asuka. At WrestleMania Backlash Charlotte competed in a Triple Threat Match with the pair looking to regain the RAW women’s crown. Despite an impressive showing, Flair eventually came up short as Ripley pinned Asuka to retain her title. After the match, Ripley taunted Flair as the issues between the two women look far from resolved.
